How to Size Goalie Skates

how to size and fit goalie skates with sizing charts

Jump to:

Goalie skates are sized similar to shoes, however there is also a little more to consider when sizing skates as well. As a rule of thumb, a skate size will be 1 to 2 sizes small than a US shoe size for a quick conversion, however, it is recommended to get the length of your foot sized at a retailer to get your proper size. When fitting younger goalies, it is also recommended to go one half size larger to allow for growth of the goalie without outgrowing the skate.

As with shoes, it is important to make sure that the toes are not right up against the front of the skate. When the skate goes on, ensure that there is a little bit of wiggle room at the toes. The desired amount of room will vary from goalie to goalie, but all in all you want to make sure your toe is not pressed right up against the toe cap. It is also important to make sure there isn’t a lot of play when the skate is tied tight, as this will lead to blistering and rubbing. Common areas where this happens are the heel, the ankle bone, the toes (especially the side of the big toe), and the area in which the top of the skate boot is laced (also called lace bite). To allow for proper fit for those who may find the length of a skate fits fine, but the width is too tight or too loose, certain manufacturers make skates that have different width options as well. Some manufacturers that don’t offer these options may fit narrower or wider depending on their design.

On top of ensuring the length and the width of the foot fit properly, it is important to ensure the skate is comfortable and is not digging into any parts of the foot. Common problematic areas are the ankle, the heel, and the top of the boot where the lace is tightened. Try on a few different models to find which manufacturer and model feels most comfortable. Remember, the skate is one of the pieces of equipment that can make or break an ice time, as uncomfortable skates can lead to sore and fatigued feet and makes top performance hard.

To help fit a skate properly, you can get the skates baked in a skate oven and then put on your foot to help mold it to the shape of your foot. This can be done at most retailers. There are also aftermarket insoles that can affect how comfortable a skate is or how well it fits.
