To size goalie pants properly, the preference of the goalie must be considered. Certain pants are designed to be narrower pants so that the chest protector can sit over top of the pants, and certain pants are wider to allow the chest protector to be tucked into the pant. Take that into consideration when fitting pants and look for pants that are designed for your goalie’s preference. For goalies who tuck their chest protector into their pants, a size larger pant is an option to allow the extra room to tuck the chest protector in, as long as the pant is not too bulky and restricts movement. Suspenders would be recommended to prevent the pant from falling down.

As a general rule of thumb, a goalie’s pant size can be determined by taking their waist size and adding 8-10 inches to get what their pant size would be. Much like the chest protector, the pants are mostly sized by coverage, as you want to ensure there are no open spots a puck could hit. Ensure there is overlap between the pants and the chest protector (regardless of if the chest protector is tucked in or not), especially when the goalie is moving their body around. Get them to reach up and bend down a bit to make sure that the chest protector and the pants maintain overlapped coverage.
The pants should also go down low enough to overlap with the thigh rise (the part of the pad that extends above the knee) of the pads. The pants will not go all the way down to the knee, which will leave a gap between the knee cradle of the pad and about halfway up the thigh, which is why it is recommended to get a pair of goalie knee pads to provide that coverage.
Pants that are too small will be very tight on the goalie in the leg area, and will restrict mobility. They will be hard to put on as well. Pants that are too big will be hard to move in as well as they will be bulky. They also will fall down easily, and it is not recommended to go too big in the pants for these reasons. As stated above, a size up for extra room is a possibility, as long as mobility is still there.

The gap between the pants and the chest protector is too large. This indicates the pants or the chest protector are too small, or one of them need to be adjusted.
