Skating is an incredibly important part of a goalie’s game. Being able to work on it at any point when there is down time is going to go a long way in improving a goalie’s game. Below we have put together 5 quick and easy goalie skating crease patterns that can even be done off to the side of the rink, and most of them without a net. When performing any skating drill, ensure the goalie has proper movement technique such as proper rotations, staying low and slightly forward through their pushes, and getting a hard stop and set at the end. Five Point Crease Movement

Simple and easy skating and angles drill for beginner goalies and goalies of all ages

The five point crease movement drill is a great drill for goalies of all skill levels as it helps to work on angles as well as skating. The simplest form of the drill, as shown in the image, helps the goalie to work on small adjustments using shuffles, inside edge pushes, or knee shuffles. With this set up, however, there are a ton of variations that can be made to get different looks and different pushes, depending on the goalie’s skill level and desired outcome of the drill. This drill can be done with a net off to the side, or even with no net at all. Pucks or other objects can be used instead of cones.

The Over and Back Crease Pattern

The over and back pattern is great for focusing on those long, explosive pushes. It is also a great way to start introducing transitional movement. This is when the goalie is pushing one way and transitions back the way they came, which is a great skillset to have for quick puck movement during a game. This drill can be varied to have multiple different movements throughout the drill.

This drill can be done with a net to the side, or even with no net at all.

The Crown Crease Pattern

The crown pattern is great for not only working on pushes, but to also work on c-cuts and depth control. As with all the other drills, the movements in between cones can be varied to help the goalie work on different movements. It is important the goalie keeps their head up while performing the c-cuts instead of looking at their feet to find the top of the crease as their backing up. Post Play U Crease Pattern

Simple and easy skating and post play drill for beginner goalies and goalies of all ages

This drill is incredibly simple in nature, but the problem is a lot of goalies are uncomfortable with post play. This drills is a great way to simplify working on going in and out of the post, as well as post to post. This can be done with less experienced goalies to just work on post play while standing, or this can be done with more experience goalies working on transitions from feet to knees or vice versa on post transitions. This drill can be done with a net to the side. For goalies working on standing post play, this drill can be done without a net, although it is usually best to have the posts there to work on proper post seals. For goalies performing this drill with aspects of the RVH (on their knees), a net is required.

Three Point Post Bump Outs

Simple and easy skating and post play drill for beginner goalies and goalies of all ages

The three point post bump outs is another good drill for getting comfortable with transitions in and out of the post. This helps the goalie be able to push off of their post to get set on different areas of the ice, simulating passes from the corner or behind the net. This can be done all while standing, all while on the knees, or a combination of both depending on the skill level and age of the goalie.

This drill can be done with a net to the side. For goalies working on standing post play, this drill can be done without a net, although it is usually best to have the posts there to work on proper post seals. For goalies performing this drill with aspects of the RVH (on their knees), a net is required.
